General advice about the internet
The virtual world of the internet has grown so vastly, the information and opportunities for learning and fun it provides are limitless. Accessing the internet has become so easy that all you need for access is a computer, cell phone or any other computer device. These computer devices enable you to instantly post pictures or videos online by publishing them on various internet sites, such as social networks.
We tend to publish pictures, videos and personal information without thinking much. At times, we end up wishing that we could remove things that have been posted either by ourselves or by our friends and we do not want published. Most internet sites provide the option for deleting things you have already posted, but remember that those things were made public and anyone may have gotten hold of them and may publish them again without your permission.
When online, you can run into people with bad intentions who might try to convince you to post personal information or files you do not want to be public, so always refuse such requests that violate your privacy. If you feel you are being pressured by someone in doingsomething while chatting online or in social networks, you can immediately block that person and stop him from bothering you anylonger.
Unfortunately, while you are online you can run into some really strange people who are not friendly or have bad intentions. Some use the internet and some use cell phones. So,you should be very careful to avoid them andshould you run into such people you should inform your parents or an adult in your family immediately.
Children use different methods to carry out cyberbullying, but the most frequent ones are through messages or pictures sent to mobile phones, email, chat, and websites targeting an individual or a specific group of children.
Cyber bullying through technologies like cell phones or the internet can hurt someone not only at school but also at home. This is because both cell phones and the internetprovide internet access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and people with a predisposition for online bullyingare able to make a specific person feel upset or threatened no matter where, at school or home.
Identifying the person doing the bullying via cell phone or internet can be difficultsometimes, since they can block their personal data and their email addresses can be anonymous.
The nature of this type of harassment can be so wide-ranging that many people sometimes actually do not realize they are involved in bullying. Therefore, never be part of bullying byconveying offensive messages you get from someone to the targeted person. Sometimes it may all seem like a joke, but this joke can be very upsetting for the person who is being bullied.
If you are concerned that someone is threatening or harassing you either online or via cell phone, then inform an adult in your family in order to help you stop that person.
Always respect other people and always be aware of what you receive and send while online.
There are a number of things which you need to consider before you start using social networking sites. When you open your profile on social networking sites, always be careful about what type of information you include in it. Remember, you do not know friends of your friends and you do not know what will happen to your posted pictures or personal information such as email addresses, home address or phone number. Rememberthat the personal information and pictures in your profile are visible to everyone. If this fact alone makes you feel uncomfortable, then better don’t publish them in your profile and don’t make them public. The same goes for logs that you can post in your profile and are visible to everyone.
If you wouldn’t want your parents, relatives or a certain person to see a post or a comment, then better do not post it. Always be careful with what you write on social networks – a topic may seem perfectly normal to you but not so much to some certain people. In some cases you may even offend someone unintentionally.
You should also be careful when you accept friend requests on social networks. If these people are strangers to you, do not accept their friend requests and do not let them to access your profile and your personal information or pictures. While using the social networks, you may run into annoying strangerswho persistently want to talk to you online although there no evidence to show whether these people are really who they claim to be in their profiles. The same ones may ask you to meet with them or may attempt to get personal information from you, which you should not allow. If you come across such a situation, it is recommended that you inform your parents or your guardian and get their opinion about this issue.
