Just like in the real world, the internet presents some threats your child should be aware of too.
Cyber bullying refers to bullying that takes place using internet or electronic technology. Since technology is everywhere nowadays, cyber bullying can reach a kid regardless of where he/she is, at home or school. Sometimes it can be difficult to trace the bully, since they can block their personal data and their email addresses can be anonymous.
This type of bullying can be evidenced, because you can save the SMS messages or print emails, the content of websites or chat. This can then be used as evidence to catch the bully. If your child is cyber bullied, make sure that:
- The child does not respond to the bully;
- The child blocks contact with the bully.
- You save all communications, such as SMS messages, emails or website content, as evidence.
Pedophilia is a term used to refer to people who have a sexual interest in children and want to abuse them sexually either online or in a real setting. Unfortunately, such people often attempt to contact children via the internet – social networks, chat rooms or online games pages. They pretend to be someone else and show interest in children. It is very important that children are made aware that there are such people. Children should never do things that make them feel uncomfortable, either online or offline. Pedophilia is a process of manipulation to obtain control over children. Children should feel close to their parents and know they can talk to them whenever there is something bothering them.
Inappropriate websites for children
The internet is accessible by anyone who wants to post things online and children may come across things that are inappropriate for their age.
Parental controls can reduce the risk of your child visiting inappropriate sites. However, parental filters are not 100% effective and unsuitable material can still slip through these filters. For this reason, you should supervise your children closely when they are online and encourage them to talk to you if they are worried.
Viruses and hackers
Computers have become an important part of our lives, so it is important to keep them up and running.
